'I don't have to be everybody's favourite,' declares Carolyn Dawn Johnson on her third album Love and Negotiation. She means it in the romantic sense. But it might be a good idea if she began to apply that same philosophy to her career.

After all, despite snagging a slew of awards and praise for her debut disc Room With a View back in 2001, the Alberta-born, Nashville-based singer-songwriter has yet to crack the big time. And much as we like CDJ, we'd be surprised if Love and Negotiation changed that tune.

On the surface, it's hard to see the problem. Johnson has a gorgeous voice; she plays several instruments; she's a capable journeyman songwriter and producer; and she isn't hard on the eyes.

And like its predecessors, Love and Negotiation is another solid set of well-written, highly melodic country-pop with decent hooks, strong choruses, radio-friendly production and Dixie Chicksy bluegrass overtones.

After a few listens, though, you realize that Johnson's style, while charming, isn't very distinctive. Most of these songs are generic, middle-of-the-road offerings that could easily be sung by an endless list of country and pop artists.

That's undoubtedly good for business when you're a struggling songwriter. But it's a drawback to a performer -- especially one as creatively ambitious as Johnson seems to be.

Even if she doesn't want to be everybody's favourite, she needs to take bigger chances and stand out from the crowd if she wants to cross the line from country-pop cutie-pie to a truly respected artist. And that's not up for negotiation.
